Earth Circle

2017 Docket

WDN's Earth Circle organizes engaging programs and advocacy opportunities on critical climate justice issues. We identify leading-edge, movement-building efforts that leverage change in strategic and creative ways, that are led by or benefit women of color, and in particular, Indigenous women in leadership.

Indigenous women’s leadership on climate justice is vital, yet their work is often underfunded.

In 2017, we are raising $90,000 for three incredible organizations with proven track records of success and impact. Learn more about them below:

  • Eriel Deranger and Indigenous Climate Action (ICA) - This is an emergent Indigenous network of First Nations Leaders working together to develop coherent and effective strategies to defend their lands and waters. They are advancing a narrative and a political and economic strategy to keep tar sands and other oils, coals, and uranium in the ground.

  • The Climate Justice Alliance (CJA) is a past Earth Circle grantee and organizes in marginalized and deeply impacted communities. CJA leverages their grassroots power to bring policy solutions to the forefront. Their work is now being integrated into a massive collaborative effort called It Takes Roots. • WECAN, the Women’s Earth and Climate Action Network educates and organizes women across the U.S. WECAN connects Indigenous women leaders to mainstream climate accords and key influencers. Recently, a WECAN delegation traveled to Norway, where they successfully lobbied the Norwegian government to divest $8 billion in coal investments from its pension fund. Investing in WECAN makes a true difference. They operate on a shoestring budget, yet their impact is enormous on environmental activism and change.
